The Village of Steinwenden

While Steinwenden and Weltersbach were joined together in 1964, Obermohr - which was first mentioned in 987 as "Villa Móraha" - was incorporated in 1969. Several archeological findings from Roman times, like the "Villa Rustica", demonstrate that people lived in this area during the first few centuries A.D.
The center of Steinwenden consists of the Lutheran church, the village square and the fountain. A few meters to the South, on the old cemetery hill, is the village's community hall which was completed in 1992. It is surrounded by a park which is home to the village's oldest structure, the Roman Tower. The northern part of the village contains a gymnasium, an out-door sports facilities and a kindergarten. A meeting place for senior citizens and young people is located in the old train station which was recently restored and is now the center-piece of the village. Popular sites for local events are the Citizens' Hall (Bürgerhaus) near the Obermohr church and the Multi-Purpose Hall between the sports field and the shooting range in Weltersbach.
All parts of Steinwenden were successful in Germany's "Beautiful Village" competition. In the 1980s Obermohr was the winner in the state-wide competition and received a bronze medal for the Germany-wide portion. Newly developed residential areas have increased the village's size and have attracted young families to the region.
While Weltersbach and Obermohr are old farming villages, Steinwenden has a long tradition of artisans. Today this community, with its excellent infra-structure, provides work for more than 500 people. As in all villages of the Ramstein-Miesenbach Union Community, Steinwenden supports village life with a variety of very active private clubs and organizations.
